Top Prize Dick Whittington Pantomime Tickets

The winner of our dazzling Christmas Competition for North East Schools has been announced.

Congratulations to Clover Hill Community Primary School in Whickham who have taken the top prize! Twenty nine lucky pupils in the Year 2 class will go to see the marvellous Dick Whittington Pantomime at the Theatre Royal, Newcastle on Friday 4th December.

Children were asked to send EYPS Teaching Supply creative poems about Dick Whittington and his cat for a chance to win pantomime tickets for the whole class.

All of the entries we received were imaginative and inspirational but there was one entry which stood out from the others. It was the poem submitted by Clover Hill which was bundled up creatively in a knapsack on a stick, the type Dick Whittington took on his travels!

Louise Easton, Headteacher at the school was delighted to hear about the win. She said “WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL NEWS! What can I say! We are all so thrilled at Clover Hill – you just wouldn’t believe it! Such a significant prize- I can’t thank you all enough.”

The youngsters in Year 2 had been learning about the real Dick Whittington as part of their History topic. Their winning poem was about actual events they had researched. Here it is:

The year was 1369

Not far from London town

An orphan boy, Dick Whittington was feeling a little down

He set off with his knapsack

He met a cat on the way

He hoped the streets were packed with gold

That’s what people say

He met a man in a fabric shop

Mr Fitzwarrent was his name

He loved his daughter Alice

But did she feel the same?

King Rat was fierce

He hated Dick

He blamed him for stealing money

A terrible trick

He waked away from London

The bells began to ring

Turn again Whittington

They said with a ding dong ding!

He went to magical Morocco

But King Rat sank the ship

He swam to the distant shore

What a horrible trip

He helped the King

He got rewards

Back to London he came

He married Alice he became Mayor

Dick Whittington was his name!

There were also four runner up schools; Redesdale Primary School, Thomas Bewick School, Hexham East First School and Lord Blyton Primary School. They will each receive a copy of the newly released Dick Whittington pantomime DVD starring Britain’s Got Talent winner, Ashleigh & Pudsey, to watch in school as a Christmas treat.
