Teaching is one of the most stressful occupations

Teaching is one of the most stressful occupations. EYPS Teaching Supply would like to know if you agree or disagree with this statement?

The TES published an article ‘Teaching is among the ‘top three most stressed occupations’’

The article highlights the work of Sir Cary Cooper, a professor of organisational psychology and health at the University of Manchester’s business school and a former government adviser on well-being.

Sir Cary informed TES that the teaching profession is often ranked among the most stressful careers.

He commented “Of all the occupations I’ve studied, and that’s about 80, teachers are in the top three most stressed occupations,” he said. “The hours are long and antisocial, the workload is heavy and there is change for change’s sake from various governments.”

The article also mentions that anxiety and stress are main reasons for absence in lots of occupations but that in teaching these issues were “endemic”. You can read the full article on the TES website.

An investigation by the BBC earlier in the year also found that ‘stress levels among teachers in England’s classrooms are soaring’. The study identifies workload as the predominant cause of stress within the teaching industry.
